Manifesto

A festival for equal rights and a culture of respect

Grifo Festival — International Short Film Perugia was born in Perugia, a city symbolic of dialogue and culture, as a collective project to combat gender-based violence through the language of short films. The Grifo, a historical symbol of Perugia, becomes a metaphor for a community that wants to affirm equal rights and a culture of respect.

The inspiration comes from the international campaign Orange the World, promoted by the United Nations against violence against women and for its prevention. The Festival explores the theme in depth in all its forms: psychological, economic, domestic, sexual, symbolic, and linguistic violence. Condemnation is essential but not sufficient: behind violence lies a worldview that legitimizes discrimination at the expense of women and the so-called "weak." Prevention requires achieving that equality of rights which should be the root of every form of civil coexistence.

Short film is an extraordinary tool to bring to the surface that grey area where violence feeds, sometimes remaining hidden for years. In a few minutes, it can open perspectives, stir consciences, and make daily mechanisms recognizable. It can also make people understand that a different world is possible: women and men as free elements, capable of collaborating without subjugation, aware that mutual support is a guarantee for a better future.

Grifo Festival works alongside the Comune di Perugia, Regione Umbria, Schools, Universities, institutions, and all local organizations sensitive to the issue.

Every year, the Grifo Festival brings together filmmakers from all over the world, anti-violence centers, institutions, schools, and citizens in a program of fiction short film screenings, roundtables, workshops, and exhibitions. The finalist works compete for the Grifo di Platino and the Grifo d'Argento, audience award.

Il tema

Orange the World

Psychological violence

Manipulation, isolation, devaluation: violence that leaves no visible bruises but erodes identity.

Economic violence

Control of money, work, and autonomy: an invisible chain that prevents escape.

Domestic violence

What happens behind closed doors, often for years, too often in silence.

Witnessed violence

The silent trauma of children growing up in homes where their mother suffers violence.

Sexual violence and harassment

Rape, abuse, harassment at work and in public spaces: women's bodies as a territory of conquest.

Language and patriarchal culture

Stereotypes, jokes, images, narratives: the culture that normalizes and prepares for violence.

Empowerment and self-determination

Women who tell their stories, make choices, and build their future, on and off screen.
